Chamber Music Charleston returns to the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island (2164 Highway 174, Edisto) on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 3pm with a program of music for flute, clarinet, bassoon, and French Horn with a nod to the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States. The program begins with wind marches from the Revolutionary War era, evoking the spirit of independence. The concert continues with a wind trio by François Devienne, an 18th-century composer who began in the Military Band of the French Guard and became the first flute professor at the Paris Conservatory after France’s revolution. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Op. 87 Wind Quartet, a work that reflects the revolutionary energy and creative transformation of early 19th-century Europe.
Chamber Music Charleston (CMC) is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 2006. CMC is known for its wide variety of engaging and exciting classical programs, from Ovation Concerts at the Dock Street and Sottile Theatres to intimate House Concerts in the historic homes of Downtown Charleston and grand living spaces of Kiawah Island and Bishop Gadsden. CMC attracts internationally acclaimed guest artists to play alongside their professional local musicians in over 50 concerts each season. Highlights of past seasons include performances by legendary violinist Midori, two sold-out performances at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall, concerts at the South Carolina Aquarium, Old Exchange Building, and Drayton Hall, and the commission and world premiere performance of James Stephenson’s “There Are No Words,” written in response to Charleston’s Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting in June 2015

Everett Smith and wife, Joan, moved to Edisto Beach full time in February 1999 and still loving every minute of it. They performed many shows while living in Irmo, SC as "Sometimes Joan" as a trio with great friend guitarist-vocalist, Mikey Ray Wilhelm, shown on the far right of this photo from October 2024. They rediscovered Edisto Beach while performing there in the late 90s at Coots and Sunset Grille, which is now Pressley's at The Marina.
Local performers had the market saturated and Everett began freelancing with them before creating Edisto Gumbo in 2002. Full band shows were the standard 3-4 weekends every month with an ever changing lineup of available musicians from Columbia, Charleston and Charlotte.
The evolution continues with new faces and returning original musicians who play in other groups. This flux keeps their random playlist fresh and flexible. Duo shows have become the norm over the past few years while full band opportunities mostly revolve around private events. It is truly a live experience with their personal interpretations of classic rock, blues and country music favorites.
Original tunes are mixed in along the way and their infectious joyful vibe and love for live musical performances keeps the magic working. Edisto Gumbo does travel wherever the next opportunity may lead them, just call 803-960-2764 or email at edistogumbo@gmail.com for scheduling your special event.
